Murphy scores 26, sparks consolation victory

WESTERVILLE, OH , December 28 , 2000--Junior Stephanie Murphy (Munroe Falls, OH/Stow-Munroe Falls) tied a school record with six 3-pointers and finished with a career-high 26 points as Grove City defeated Dubuque (IA) in the consolation game of Otterbein's "O" Club Classic Thursday afternoon.

Murphy, named to the All-Tournament Team, fired in 18 of her game-high 26 points in the second half, finishing 10 of 17 from the floor and 6 of 10 from outside the arc.  Junior Kristy Kegg (Johnstown, PA/Ferndale) chipped in with 11 points, eight coming in the final 6:40.

Grove City, who improved to 9-2 overall, broke a 26-26 halftime tie and never trailed again.  The Lady Wolverines led by as many as eight points, 53-45, before the Lady Spartans cut it to two, 58-56, with 13 seconds remaining.   Kegg secured the win with a pair of free throws with five ticks showing.

Murphy, who hit four threes in the final 20 minutes, added three steals and two assists.  Murphy's six triples tied the school record set by Joni Pavlasky against Washington & Jefferson on Jan. 10, 1990.  Pavlasky's 15 3-point attempts that day is still the school standard.

Junior Kristina Dixon (Smethport, PA/Smethport) recorded six rebounds and six assists, while sophomore Jessica Jenkins (Conneautville, PA/Cambridge Springs) also grabbed six boards.  Sophomore Cara Denniston (Grove City, PA/Grove City) contributed eight points (4-4 FT) and five rebounds.

Dubuque, who fell to 1-6 overall, fell behind 6-0 before rallying with a 14-3 run to lead by five, 14-9, with eight minutes left in the first half.  The lead changed three more times before intermission.

Grove City is idle until Jan. 10 when it travels to Hiram for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
