Lady Wolverines fall in overtime, 59-55
GROVE CITY, PA , January 24 , 2001--Sophomore Jessica Jenkins (Conneautville, PA/Cambridge Springs) rallied Grove City from a 10-point second-half deficit with 11 points in the final 10 minutes, but visiting Washington & Jefferson pulled out a 59-55 conference victory in overtime Wednesday night.
The Lady Wolverines fell to 1-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, 11-5 overall, while the Presidents improved to 4-10, 2-1 in the league.
Washington & Jefferson extended a 23-16 halftime lead to 33-23 with 16 minutes left in regulation, however, Grove City recovered with a 17-5 run to take a 40-38 lead at the 7:40 mark. The lead changed five more times before Lady Wolverine junior Livia Wright (Economy, PA/Ambridge) sunk a lay-up with 10 seconds left to send the game to overtime tied 49-49.
Junior Stephanie Murphy (Munroe Falls, OH/Stow-Munroe Falls) drilled a three-pointer to open the extra session, but W&J tossed in back-to-back field goals and never trailed again.
Jenkins and Murphy were the only Lady Wolverines in double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Senior Kristina Dixon (Smethport, PA/Smethport) contributed five assists, eight rebounds and three steals. Wright grabbed a game-high nine rebounds, while sophomore Cara Denniston (Grove City, PA/Grove City) chipped in with nine points, five blocked shots (all in the first half) and three steals. Junior Kristy Kegg (Johnstown, PA/Ferndale) also added nine points.
Adrienne Egenrieder paced W&J with 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting and seven boards.
Grove City held W&J scoreless through the first six minutes of the game, but managed only two points of its own in the same span. The Lady Wolverines shot just 19% in the first half (6-31) and finished 31% on the night (20-64).
