Grove City beats Bethany, back in PAC race
BETHANY, WV, February 3, 2001--Sophomore Cara Denniston (Grove City, PA/Grove City) fired in 19 points, including 16 in the second half as the Grove City Lady Wolverines defeated two-time defending league champion Bethany, 61-50, in Bethany, WV on Saturday.
The Lady Wolverines improved to 13-6 overall and 3-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, while the Bison fell to 13-7 and 3-2 in the PAC. The league loss marked Bethany's second in a row after 20 straight wins against PAC opponents. Thiel ended the streak Wednesday with an 80-66 victory in Greenville.
Denniston netted 11 of 12 from the free-throw line, including 8 of 8 in the closing minutes, and hit 3 of 3 from the floor, including a pair of three-pointers. She also added two blocks, two rebounds and a steal.
Grove City led 30-19 at halftime and opened up a 17-point bulge, 41-24, before Bethany rallied with a 16-4 run to trim the lead to 45-40 with seven minutes left to go. The Lady Wolverines maintained a five- to nine-point lead over the next four minutes, but Bethany rallied to pull within three, 53-50, with 1:23 left. Grove City closed the scoring by hitting 8 of 8 from the free-throw line with Denniston knocking down six and junior T.L. Thompson (Girard, PA/Girard) two.
Junior Kristy Kegg (Johnstown, PA/Ferndale) chipped in with 10 points, including two threes in the first half. Junior Livia Wright (Economy, PA/Ambridge) contributed nine points and six boards. Thompson closed with eight points and four assists, while senior Kristina Dixon (Smethport, PA/Smethport) grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. Sophomore Jessica Jenkins (Conneautville, PA/Cambridge Springs) provided a spark off the bench with six caroms, including five in the first half.
Grove City outshot Bethany, 50% to 29%, and posted a decisive 42-24 edge on the glass.
