Lady Wolverine rally comes up short at W&J
WASHINGTON, PA, February 7, 2001--Grove City fell behind 14-2 and couldn't catch host Washington & Jefferson, who posted a 61-50 victory to take a two-game lead over the Lady Wolverines in the race for the top seed at the 2001 Presidents' Athletic Conference championship tournament.
Grove City fell to 13-7 overall and 3-3 in the PAC, while W&J improved to 8-12 overall, 5-1 in the league.
The Lady Wolverines trailed 36-25 at halftime, but closed the gap to four, 49-45, with 5:15 left in the game. However, the Presidents outscored Grove City 12-4 the rest of the way to take the season series, 2-0.
Sophomore Jessica Jenkins (Conneautville, PA/Cambridge Springs) claimed high-point and high-rebound honors for the Lady Wolverines with 11 points and six boards off the bench. Juniors Kristy Kegg (Johnstown, PA/Ferndale) and Stephanie Murphy (Munroe Falls, OH/Stow-Munroe Falls) finished with nine and seven points, respectively.
Rachel Armitage led four Presidents in double-figures with 20 points including four 3-pointers in the first half.
W&J outshot Grove City, 45% to 37%, and led on the glass, 33-29.
Lady Wolverine junior T.L. Thompson (Girard, PA/Girard) was forced to leave the game just 10 minutes in after colliding with another player under the basket. Thompson left with a minor head injury.
