Lady Wolverines net 14th win at Thiel
GREENVILLE, PA, February 10, 2001--The Grove City Lady Wolverines improved to 14-7 overall and 4-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Saturday, defeating cross-county rival Thiel, 54-41, in Greenville. The Lady Cats dropped to 9-13 overall, 3-3 in the PAC.
Junior Stephanie Murphy (Munroe Falls, OH/Stow-Munroe Falls) and sophomore Cara Denniston (Grove City, PA/Grove City) led the Lady Wolverines to the season sweep over Thiel with 14 points apiece. Murphy buried four 3-pointers and added five assists and three steals. Denniston hit 5 of 7 from the floor, including 3 of 4 from outside the arc, and handed out two assists.
The Lady Wolverines recovered from 8-for-26 shooting (31%) in the first half with 13-25 marksmanship (52%) after the break. Grove City outshot Thiel 41% to 35% in the game.
Sophomore Christy Faller (Ijamsville, MD/Urbana) ripped down a game-high 10 rebounds, while senior Kristina Dixon (Smethport, PA/Smethport) grabbed nine boards, helping Grove City post a 36-28 advantage on the glass.
Thiel led by as many as eight in the first half, 23-15, and took a 23-20 edge into halftime. Grove City grabbed a 31-30 lead at the 14-minute mark and never trailed again.
With the victory, Grove City virtually assured itself of no worse than the third seed at the 2001 PAC Championship Tournament, Feb. 23-24.
