GCC closes regular season with six-point loss
GROVE CITY, PA, February 17, 2001--The Grove City Lady Wolverines nearly spoiled Westminster's bid to grab a piece of history Saturday, but the Lady Titans rallied from a 28-25 halftime deficit to record their school-record 12th consecutive victory in a 60-54 win at the College Arena.
Grove City fell to 15-8 overall, while Westminster improved to 16-9.
The Lady Wolverines led by as many as six, 19-13, with 8:29 left in the first half before taking a three-point lead into intermission. However, Westminster scored the first seven points of the second half and never trailed again. Grove City cut the deficit to four, 43-39, with 8:37 to play when junior Kristy Kegg (Johnstown, PA/Ferndale) nailed one of her three 3-pointers, but the Lady Wolverines' couldn't get any closer.
Kegg finished with a team-high15 points, while freshman Leigh LeGare (Copperas Cove, TX/Copperas Cove) added 13 points off the bench on 5-for-7 shooting. LeGare and senior Kristina Dixon (Smethport, PA/Smethport) each grabbed a team-best five rebounds.
Robin Thayer paced the Lady Titans with 17 points, including 13 in the second half.
Dixon, the squad's only senior, was honored before the game in a brief ceremony. Dixon has collected 554 career points, including 388 since transferring to GCC from Wheeling Jesuit University after her sophomore year.
The Lady Wolverines will tip-off in the 2001 Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament next Thursday. They will meet Bethany in the semifinals at 6:00 p.m. at Washington & Jefferson.
