Lady Wolverines win in Altoona, 70-55

ALTOONA, PA, January 12, 2002--Three Lady Wolverines scored in double figures as Grove City defeated host Penn State Altoona, 70-55, in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

The win marked the 100th in the career of ninth-year head coach Melissa Lamie (100-112), whose husband Steve, the men's fourth-year mentor, notched victory No. 50 on Wednesday.

Senior Stephanie Murphy (Munroe Falls, OH/Stow-Munroe Falls) sparked the win with a game-high 14 points and a career-best eight assists.  Sophomore Leigh LeGare (Copperas Cove, TX/Copperas Cove) scored 13 points, hitting 4 of 6 shots from the floor and 5 of 6 from the free-throw line.  Senior Kristy Kegg (Johnstown, PA/Ferndale) chipped in with 12 points, including a pair of three-pointers.  Murphy and Kegg added four and three steals, respectively.

Grove City, who led 31-24 at halftime, improved to 6-7 overall despite shooting 32.4 percent from the field (23-71).  The Lady Wolverines controlled the boards, however, outrebounding the Lady Cougars, 48-34.  Junior Jessica Jenkins (Conneautville, PA/Cambridge Springs) grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds, while junior Christy Faller (Ijamsville, MD/Urbana) pulled down 10 boards.  

Lynnea DeBernardis scored a team-high 10 points for Penn State Altoona, who fell to 6-4.  The Lady Cougars had been 2-0 against Presidents' Athletic Conference schools this season, beating Washington & Jefferson, 67-65, and Waynesburg, 74-55.
