Westminster rallies past GCC, 67-62

NEW WILMINGTON, PA, January 26, 2002--The Grove City Lady Wolverines had their four-game winning steak snapped Saturday afternoon as host Westminster rallied from an 18-point halftime deficit to post a 67-62 victory at Buzz Ridl Gymnasium in New Wilmington.

Grove City (9-8) built a 37-21 lead at intermission and scored the first bucket of the second half to open up an 18-point cushion, 39-21, before Westminster (8-8) struck back.  The Lady Titans switched to a zone-press defense and outscored the Lady Wolverines 41-14 over a 14-minute stretch, including an 18-0 run that gave them their first lead since scoring the game's opening basket.  Westminster would never trail again, leading by as many as eight points, 64-56, at the three-minute mark.  Grove City, victimized by 13 second-half turnovers, cut the margin to three, 65-62, with 23 seconds left before Westminster posted the winning five-point margin.

Junior Cara Denniston (Grove City, PA/Grove City) kept Grove City close in the second half, scoring 10 of her team-high 12 points in the game.   Denniston was a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line.  Freshman Abby Moose (Mercer, PA/Mercer) shared high-point honors with 12 markers, including a pair of three-pointers.  Sophomore Leigh LeGare (Copperas Cove, TX/Copperas Cove) chipped in 10 points.  Junior Jessica Jenkins (Conneautville, PA/Cambridge Springs) pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.

Westminster's comeback was aided by 62 percent shooting in the second half (16-26) after a 31 percent showing in the first half (9-29).  Grove City shot 47 percent for the game (26-55), its highest mark in eight games.

Robin Thayer led the Lady Titans with 15 points.
