Lady Wolverines beat Bethany, move to 4-0 in PAC

GROVE CITY, PA, January 30, 2002--The Grove City College women's basketball team assumed sole possession of first place in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Wednesday night, beating three-time defending champion Bethany College, 75-73.

The win marked Grove City's eighth in 10 games and improved its record to 10-8 overall, 4-0 in the PAC.  Bethany had its eight-game winning streak snapped and fell to 15-4 overall, 3-1 in the league.

The Lady Wolverines set the tone early, building a 15-point lead before taking a 37-28 edge into intermission.  They maintained at least a seven-point cushion through the first seven minutes of the second half before Bethany rallied to take a 61-58 lead with 7:07 remaining.  Senior Kristy Kegg (Johnstown, PA/Ferndale) nailed her third three-pointer of the game with 5:57 left to put Grove City back on top, 63-61, and added a bucket at 4:39 to extend the lead to four, 67-63.  The Bison clawed back to go up one, 68-67, with 3:19 left, but senior Stephanie Murphy (Munroe Falls, OH/Stow-Munroe Falls) countered with the team's ninth three-pointer of the night to give Grove City the lead for good.  Kegg and senior Erica Youngman (Slippery Rock, PA/Slippery Rock) added clutch free throws down the stretch to preserve the victory.

Grove City knocked down 18 of 23 free throws in the game.

Four Lady Wolverines scored in double figures led by Kegg and junior Jessica Jenkins (Conneautville, PA/Cambridge Springs), who tallied 16 points each.  Youngman and junior Misty Wadowsky (Slippery, PA/Slippery Rock) chipped in 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Murphy finished with a team-high six rebounds and six assists, while Kegg, Wadowsky and freshman Abby Moose (Mercer, PA/Mercer) grabbed five boards apiece.

Katie Hardie turned in a double-double for the Bison with 17 points and 16 rebounds.
