W&J holds on to beat Grove City, 57-49
GROVE CITY, PA, February 9, 2002--Freshman guard Abby Moose (Mercer, PA/Mercer) scored 10 points in a two-minute span to help cut a 15-point deficit to three, but visiting Washington & Jefferson used 19-for-21 shooting from the free-throw line to defeat Grove City, 57-49, at the College Arena.
With the loss, the Lady Wolverines surrendered first place in the Presidents' Athletic Conference for the first time this season, falling to 5-2 in the league, 11-10 overall. W&J improved to 4-3 in the PAC, 10-11 overall.
Point guard Shawndra McDonald fired in a game-high 18 points for the Presidents and added six rebounds and six steals. Forward Lauren Hull grabbed a game-high 10 boards.
Moose scored 13 points to lead Grove City, while forward Jessica Jenkins (Conneautville, PA/Cambridge Springs) tossed in 10 points. Forward Misty Wadowsky (Slippery Rock, PA/Slippery Rock) pulled down a team-best seven rebounds.
Grove City shot 32 percent from the floor (19-for-59) and committed 24 turnovers. The Lady Wolverines coerced 28 W&J turnovers.
W&J led at halftime, 26-19, and extended its cushion to 15 points (38-23) with 12:52 left before Grove City mounted a rally. Guard Cara Denniston (Grove City, PA/Grove City) contributed five points to a 20-7 run that ended with Moose hitting two three-pointers, a pair of free throws and a lay-up.
The Presidents maintained at least a five-point edge over the final six minutes.
