Bethany survives GCC rally, earns top seed
BETHANY, WV, February 16, 2002--The Grove City Lady Wolverines cut a 20-point deficit to one, but couldn't overtake the host Bethany Bison, who secured the top seed and right to host the 2002 Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament with a 71-65 victory Saturday at Hummel Field House in Bethany, WV.
Grove City (13-11, 5-3 PAC), who claimed the second seed, will meet third-seeded Washington & Jefferson in the semifinals next Friday at Bethany. Bethany (19-6, 6-2 PAC) will host Friday's other semifinal against the winner of Tuesday's play-in between fourth-seeded Thiel and fifth-seeded Waynesburg.
Bethany stormed to a 26-6 lead before Grove City began its slow charge back. The Lady Wolverines used a 14-0 run to claw within eight points, 32-24, before heading to intermission down 35-24.
The Bison opened the second half with a 7-0 spurt to build its lead to 18, 42-24, but Grove City never relented.
