Grove City blasts Ursinus in season opener

MEADVILLE, Pa.  --  Sophomore guard Tammy Hess (Vintondale, Pa./United) came off the bench to rifle in a career-high 16 points as the Grove City College women's basketball team opened the 2003-04 season with a 65-31 win over Ursinus in the semifinals of Allegheny College's National City Classic at the David V. Wise Center.

Hess shot 7-for-13 from the floor while also drilling a pair of three-pointers. Junior center Sandy O'Keefe (Perry, Ohio/Perry) added 14 points and seven rebounds on 7-of-10 shooting.

Grove City (1-0) blew the game open in the first half with a 35-8 blitz. Grove City limited Ursinus to 13 percent (3-for-23) shooting in the first half as Grove City led 37-11 at the intermission.

Grove City out-rebounded Ursinus 49-31 and forced 21 turnovers. The Lady Wolverines will meet Allegheny in Saturday's finals at 3 p.m. Allegheny downed Pitt-Bradford 90-68.

It is Grove City's first season-opening win since downing Richard Stockton 74-43 in the 2001 opener.
