Grove City rolls past Thiel with second-half surge
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak Saturday afternoon with a 67-49 home win over Thiel in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Grove City College Arena.
Grove City improved to 1-2 in the PAC and 8-7 overall.
Grove City led wire-to-wire and put the game away with a 27-7 run in the second half. Thiel (5-12, 0-3 PAC) closed to within 36-35 with 12 minutes left on a lay-up from forward Adrienne Mowry. However, Grove City junior Jocelyn Kempema (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Edgewood) fired in a three to ignite the lengthy run.
Freshman Lee Anne Lukcic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) added a jumper before junior guard Abby Moose (New Wilmington, Pa./Mercer) added consecutive baskets. Moose led Grove City with 15 points.
Later in the run, Moose drilled a three while Lukcic swished two foul shots. Moose capped the run with a lay-up.
Grove City jumped out to a 28-18 lead by halftime as senior Leigh LeGare (Copperas Cove, Texas/Copperas Cove) came off the bench to fire in eight first-half points. LeGare finished with 11 points and six rebounds while junior center Sandy O'Keefe (Perry, Ohio/Perry) added 10 points and four assists.
Junior guard Rachel Romance (East Springfield, Pa./Northwestern) grabbed a game-high eight rebounds as Grove City out-rebounded Thiel 41-28.
Grove City will host Waynesburg Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m.
