Late rally vaults Grove City to PAC victory
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- A 28-2 run over the final eight minutes lifted Grove City to a 76-69 home win over Waynesburg Wednesday night at the Grove City College Arena in Presidents' Athletic Conference women's basketball action.
Grove City (9-7, 2-2 PAC) trailed 65-48 with 8:28 left before charging back. Junior guard Abby Moose (New Wilmington, Pa./Mercer) fired in nine straight points to spark the run, including seven points within a four-second span.
After baskets from post players Sandy O'Keefe (Perry, Ohio/Perry) and Misty Wadowsky (Portersville, Pa./Slippery Rock) eventually cut the lead to 65-62, Moose drained a jumper. A Moose three with 1:25 left gave Grove City the lead at 67-65.
Waynesburg tied the game on a basket from Lila St. Denis but Grove City took the lead for good on a three-point play from junior guard Rachel Romance (East Springfield, Pa./Northwestern) with 58 seconds left.
Moose, Wadowsky and Jocelyn Kempema (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Edgewood) sealed the win by each making a pair of foul shots in the final 30 seconds. Grove City went 15 for 20 (75 percent) at the line in the second half.
Moose fired in a season-high 23 points while Wadowsky added a career-high 18 points and 10 rebounds. All 10 rebounds came at the offensive end. Leigh LeGare (Copperas Cove, Texas/Copperas Cove) added 10 points for Grove City.
Moose also became Grove City's all-time leader in three-point goals with 120 after making four triples in the win. She passed Stephanie Murphy, who made 117 from 1998-2002.
Grove City stormed out to an 8-0 lead as Wadowsky scored a pair of putbacks while Moose and Romance also had deuces. But Waynesburg (7-8, 0-4 PAC), led by 18 first-half points from frosh Katie Lewandowski, charged back to take a 39-29 halftime lead. Lewandowski finished with 23 points.
Grove City forced 24 turnovers which turned into 39 Wolverine points. It is Grove City's 17th consecutive victory over Waynesburg.
Moose also passed Jackie Becker (1996-2000) for 14th place on Grove City's all-time scoring list. Moose now has 747 points. Murphy is 13th at 764.
