Grove City falls in PAC tourney semifinals

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Despite 20 points from junior guard Abby Moose (New Wilmington, Pa./Mercer) and 18 points from junior center Sandy O'Keefe (Perry, Ohio/Perry), the Grove City College women's basketball team dropped a 59-54 decision at top-seeded Bethany Friday night in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals.

Bethany (22-4) advanced into the Saturday's championship against No. 3 seed Washington and Jefferson, which downed second seed Westminster, 55-53, in Friday's other semifinal.

Grove City (14-11) trailed by as many as 12, 46-34, in the second half before using a 10-0 run to forge a 48-48 tie. Grove City eventually pulled ahead 52-51 with 2:27 left on a lay-up by O'Keefe. A Nikki Babik jumper gave the lead back to Bethany but Grove City senior Misty Wadowsky (Portersville, Pa./Slippery Rock) scored inside to give the Wolverines a 53-52 lead.

However, the Bison finished the game with a 6-0 run, helping them claim their 17th straight win. Bethany senior center Kelley Richardson drained a jumper that gave Bethany the lead for good. Babik hit a pair of free throws while Richardson and Renee Shehady each split a pair of foul shots to help seal the win.

Richardson, the 2004 PAC MVP, tossed in 22 points and hauled in 16 rebounds. Babik added 10 points for Bethany.

Moose, O'Keefe and starting guards Jocelyn Kempema (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Edgewood) and Rachel Romance (East Springfield, Pa./Northwestern) all fouled out down the stretch. Grove City also struggled at the foul line, making just five of 13 attempts.

Moose earned First Team All-Conference honors while O'Keefe earned a spot on the league's Second Team. Kempema and Wadowsky were Honorable Mention picks. The 2003-04 season is Grove City's seventh winning season in the last eight years.

In addition, Moose also moved into 10th place on Grove City's all-time scoring list with 871 points. She passed Karen Watkins (1978-82), who had 862 points in her career.
