Wolverines roll past Heidelberg in opener
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Senior guard Abby Moose (New Wilmington, Pa./Mercer) pumped in 19 first-half points and finished with 23 points Friday night as Grove City opened the 2004-2005 season with a 67-43 victory over Heidelberg (0-1) in the first night of action in the Howard Johnson Tip-Off Classic at the Grove City College Arena.
The Wolverines (1-0) shot 15 for 27 (56 percent) from the floor in racing out to a 35-19 halftime lead. For the game, Grove City shot 55 percent (27 of 49) from the field.
Heidelberg pulled to within 41-34 in the second half with a 13-0 run but Grove City responded with its own 13-0 run to break the game open. Freshman guard Shannon Overdorff (Eighty Four, Pa./United) sparked the run with a layup and a pair of free throws while sophomore Lee Anne Lukcic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) and freshman Rachel McCoy (East Liverpool, Ohio/Beaver Local) also scored in the paint during the run.
Overdorff, senior Sandy O'Keefe (Perry, Ohio/Perry) and junior Tammy Hess (Vintondale, Pa./United) each added seven points. Moose added six steals while Lukcic and McCoy both had seven rebounds. Heidelberg outrebounded Grove City, 48-39. Each team also had 25 turnovers.
Amanda Campbell led The Berg with 15 points and seven rebounds. Heidelberg shot just 16 of 69 (23 percent) from the field.
Grove City will play Walsh Saturday in second-day action of the Howard Johnson Tip-Off Classic at 4 p.m. Walsh defeated Pitt-Greensburg, 80-74, in Friday's other game. The matchups were pre-determined.
