Walsh upends Grove City
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team fell to 1-1 Saturday afternoon with a 74-58 home loss to NAIA Walsh in second-day action of the 2004 Howard Johnson Tip-Off Classic at the Grove City College Arena.
Freshman forward Rachel McCoy (East Liverpool, Ohio/Beaver Local) came off the bench to pour in 21 points on 9 of 11 shooting. She added 10 rebounds and earned a spot on the All-Classic Team. Senior center Sandy O'Keefe (Perry, Ohio/Perry) added 12 points, seven boards and four blocks and joined McCoy on the All-Classic Team.
Grove City trailed 29-27 at halftime but Walsh (2-0) broke the game open with a 15-0 run in the second half. Classic MVP Ingrid Brainard capped the run with a three-pointer. She finished with 20 points, six assists, six rebounds and four steals.
Grove City outrebounded the Cavaliers, 43-36, but committed 27 turnovers. Beth Sternberg and Tammy Schumacher each chipped in 10 points for Walsh.
Heidelberg's Amanda Campbell, Pitt-Greensburg's Tish Hines and Walsh's Damoniqe' Askew also earned All-Classic honors.
Grove City hosts Carnegie Mellon Tuesday night at 5:30 p.m.
