Wolverines run past Walsh
NORTH CANTON, Ohio -- Senior center Sandy O'Keefe (Perry, Ohio/Perry) fired in a season-high 27 points while classmate Abby Moose (New Wilmington, Pa./Mercer) added 22 points and seven assists as the Grove City College women's basketball team avenged an earlier loss to Walsh with an 84-73 victory over the Cavaliers Saturday afternoon.
Grove City (3-2) stormed out of the gate to a 46-point first half. The Wolverines shot 58 percent (18 of 31) in the first half and led 46-35 at halftime. The Wolverines closed the half with an 11-3 run as freshman forward Rachel McCoy (East Liverpool, Ohio/Beaver Local) fired in eight points during the span. McCoy finished with 18 points and nine rebounds.
Grove City extended its lead to 20 early in the second half as O'Keefe ignited a 9-0 run with a three-pointer. O'Keefe finished the game 10-of-18 from the floor. However, Walsh (5-2) eventually whittled the lead down to seven, 70-63, with 5:32 left.
Moose then scored seven straight points to help seal the victory. The Wolverines outrebounded Walsh 46-35. Sophomore Lee Anne Lukcic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) added eight rebounds for Grove City.
Earlier this season, Walsh defeated Grove City 74-58 in the Wolverines' Howard Johnson Tip-Off Classic Nov. 20. Damonique' Askew led Walsh with 21 points and nine rebounds.
Grove City will host Wooster Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m.
