Grove City holds off Wooster, 71-69

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Grove City College senior guard Abby Moose (New Wilmington, Pa./Mercer) fired in 20 points and added a career-high 10 assists Wednesday night as the Grove City College women's basketball team improved to 4-2 with a 71-69 home win over Wooster at the Grove City College Arena.

Moose moved into eighth place on Grove City's career scoring list with 972 points. She passed Monica Yustak, who scored 960 points between 1984 and 1987. Moose needs 28 points to become Grove City's eighth 1,000-point scorer.

Grove City led by as many as 16, 58-42, in the second half before Wooster (2-4) rallied. Wooster eventually slashed the lead to 71-69 on a three-pointer by Vicki Meyer with 34 seconds left. Following a Grove City turnover, Wooster missed a pair of jump shots in the final seconds and freshman forward Rachel McCoy (East Liverpool, Ohio/Beaver Local) grabbed the defensive rebound as time expired. McCoy finished with 10 points and five rebounds.

Grove City stormed out to a 39-28 halftime lead as junior guard Tammy Hess (Vintondale, Pa./United) fired in 10 of her season-high 13 points in the first half.

Senior guard Rachel Romance (East Springfield, Pa./Northwestern) dished out six assists and added four steals for the Wolverines while Moose had three thefts. Grove City shot 6-for-12 behind the three-point line. Carly Loehrke led Wooster with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Meyer, Beth Besancon and Michelle Hall each had 10 points. Wooster out-rebounded Grove City 40-33 but committed 20 turnovers.

The Wolverines visit Pitt-Bradford Thursday night. The non-conference game begins at 6 p.m.
