Wolverines upend Geneva for 3rd straight win

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team won its third straight game Tuesday night, pulling out a 62-60 win over host Geneva in non-conference action at Metheny Field House. It is Grove City's third straight win overall. It is also Grove City's first win over the NAIA Golden Tornadoes (9-10) since 1993, a span of 14 games.

Senior guard Abby Moose (New Wilmington, Pa./Mercer) fired in 21 points to lead Grove City (11-8) while senior center Sandy O'Keefe (Perry, Ohio/Perry) added 12 points and four blocked shots.

Grove City led 33-31 at halftime and maintained the lead throughout the second half. However, Geneva pulled ahead, 57-55, with 2:49 remaining. But O'Keefe tied the game with a baseline jumper moments later. Grove City took the lead for good with 1:37 left on a short jumper from freshman forward Rachel McCoy (East Liverpool, Ohio/Beaver Local).

Moose split a pair of free throws with 9.4 seconds left, giving Grove City a 62-60 lead. Geneva's Jen Rawding missed the potential game-tying basket from close range with three seconds left and Grove City senior guard Rachel Romance (East Springfield, Pa./Northwestern) grabbed the rebound as time expired.

Grove City stormed out to a 20-8 lead in the first half as Moose scored 14 first-half points. Geneva took a 26-25 lead on a Rawding three but a Moose three-pointer in the final minute put Grove City up at the break.

Rawding led Geneva with 16 points. Moose added nine rebounds and four steals while McCoy had eight boards and three blocks, along with eight points. Grove City out-rebounded the Tornadoes, 43-36. The Wolverines had nine blocked shots as a team.

Grove City returns to Presidents' Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Westminster at 2 p.m.
