Seven straight for Grove City
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team earned its seventh straight victory Wednesday night, securing a 79-67 win over host Thiel in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Beeghly Gymnasium.
It is Grove City's longest win streak since an eight-game win streak that spanned the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons. It is Grove City's longest one-season streak since a 10-game win streak in 1990. Grove City also clinches a quarterfinal-round bye in next week's PAC Championship Tournament.
Senior guard Abby Moose (New Wilmington, Pa./Mercer) fired in a game-high 20 points, her fifth straight 20-point outing. Senior guard Jocelyn Kempema (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Edgewood) fired in 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting while freshman forward Rachel McCoy (East Liverpool, Ohio/Beaver Local) added 13 points and six assists.
Grove City (15-8, 7-2 PAC) trailed 35-34 at the half. Thiel (6-18, 2-7 PAC) opened the second half with a 7-0 run before Grove City battled back. A pair of Kempema jumpers helped ignite a 9-0 run, which was capped by a three-point play from senior center Sandy O'Keefe (Perry, Ohio/Perry). A Moose basket with 14:28 left broke a 47-47 tie and gave Grove City the lead for good.
The Wolverines shot 31 of 61 (51 percent) from the floor for the game and forced 27 Thiel turnovers. Moose added four assists and three steals while O'Keefe blocked four shots. Fontella Jones and Kristen Benjamin each had 15 points for Thiel.
Kempema, Moose, O'Keefe and senior guard Rachel Romance (East Springfield, Pa./Northwestern) will play their final home game Saturday afternoon as Grove City hosts Bethany in the regular season finale at 1 p.m.
