DeSales tops Grove City, 71-63
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- The
Grove City College women's basketball team closed the 2004-2005 season Wednesday
night with a 71-63 loss to No. 2 seed DeSales in the quarterfinals of the
Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Southern Championship Tournament at
Billera Hall. Grove City, the No. 7 seed entering the tournament, finishes the
season 16-10.
It is Grove City's eighth winning season in nine seasons.
The Wolverines fell behind 10-0 in the first three minutes before charging back.
Senior guard Abby Moose (New Wilmington, Pa./Mercer) fired in 11 of her
team-high 17 points in the first half as the Wolverines surged ahead with a 23-4
run. However, DeSales (21-7) pulled to within 31-29 by halftime.
Grove City led by six, 44-38, with 11 minutes to go but the Bulldogs took the
lead for good with an 18-2 run over the next five minutes.
Senior Jocelyn Kempema (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Edgewood), freshman Rachel McCoy
(East Liverpool, Ohio/Beaver Local) and freshman Shannon Overdorff (Eighty Four,
Pa./United) all tossed in 10 points for Grove City. McCoy and classmate Brittany
Anderson (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) each grabbed eight rebounds for the
Wolverines.
Holly Liebl led DeSales with a career-high 26 points, 19 of which came in the
second half. She added 11 rebounds. Alyssa Antolick added 15 points and six
boards for DeSales, which will play either Lebanon Valley or Medaille in the
ECAC semifinals Friday night. DeSales went 26 of 31 at the free-throw line while
the Wolverines were 11 of 14.
The game was the final career game for seniors Moose, Kempema, center Sandy
O'Keefe (Perry, Ohio/Perry) and point guard Rachel Romance (East Springfield,
Pa./Northwestern). Moose finishes her career as Grove City's fifth all-time
leading scorer with 1,209 points.
It was Grove City's fifth all-time appearance in the ECAC Tournament.
