Slow start dooms Grove City
GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Host Denison (5-1) jumped out to a 22-2 lead and held on for a 58-47 victory over Grove City (1-3) in non-conference women's basketball action Wednesday night at Livingston Gymnasium.
Sophomore forward Rachel McCoy (East Liverpool, Ohio/Beaver Local) led the Wolverines with 19 points on 9-for-12 shooting while senior guard Tammy Hess (Vintondale, Pa./United) added nine points.
Grove City took a 2-0 lead on the first possession of the game on a McCoy jumper but the Big Red scored 22 unanswered points over the next seven minutes. Grove City eventually pulled to within 26-18 late in the first half. In the second half, Denison extended its lead to 47-29 before Grove City battled back. A three-pointer by junior guard Elyse Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) cut the Denison lead to 49-42 with 4:29 left.
Carolyn Simpson led Denison with 12 points. The Big Red forced 30 Grove City turnovers. Denison out-rebounded Grove City, 31-27. McCoy led all players with seven rebounds.
Grove City will host Case Western Reserve Friday night at 7:30 in non-conference action.
