Hess has career day but Wolverines fall
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Senior guard Tammy Hess (Vintondale, Pa./United) fired in a career-high 20 points on Senior Day Saturday afternoon but Grove City dropped a 71-60 decision to visiting Washington and Jefferson in Presidents' Athletic Conference women's basketball action in the Grove City College Arena.
Hess fired in three three-pointers and also recorded three steals. However, Grove City could not fully complete a second-half comeback.
Washington and Jefferson (20-4, 10-2 PAC) led wire-to-wire. The Presidents led 39-30 at halftime and eventually stretched the lead to 45-30. Grove City pulled to within five, 63-58, with 3:08 left on an inside basket by sophomore forward Rachel McCoy (East Liverpool, Ohio/Beaver Local). The Presidents sealed the win with an 8-2 run over the final three minutes, though.
McCoy added 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists for Grove City while sophomore guard Shannon Overdorff (Eighty Four, Pa./United) had 10 points. Leigh Sulkowski led Washington and Jefferson with 22 points while Amanda Stanonik fired in 15. Stanonik went over the 1,000-point mark in her career for the Presidents.
Grove City (7-18, 3-9 PAC) will compete in next week's PAC Championship Tournament as the No. 7 seed. The Wolverines will play at No. 2 Thomas More Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in the quarterfinals.
