Late rally falls short
ALLIANCE, Ohio -- The Grove City College women's basketball team nearly erased an eight-point deficit in the final two minutes Tuesday night at Mount Union, but the host Purple Raiders (3-0) held on for a 53-49 win over Grove City (0-3) in non-conference action at Timken Gymnasium.
With Grove City trailing 51-49 in the closing seconds, junior guard Shannon Overdorff (Eighty Four, Pa./United) fired a potential game-winning three-pointer. However, the shot was off the mark and Mount Union grabbed the rebounds. Haley Drayer then sealed the win with two free throws with one second left.
Overdorff led Grove City with a season-high 18 points, including four three-pointers. Senior guard Elyse Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) added 13 points for the Wolverines.
Overdorff fired in 10 straight points for Grove City, allowing the Wolverines to slash Mount Union's lead from 44-33 to 47-43 with 3:15 left. A Bogusz three cut the lead to 51-49 with 44 seconds left in the game.
Drayer led Mount Union with 15 points. The Wolverines limited Mount Union to 18 of 50 (36 percent) shooting from the floor. Grove City owned a slim 37-36 rebounding advantage. Junior forward Rachel McCoy (East Liverpool, Ohio/Beaver Local) grabbed a game-high nine rebounds for Grove City.
