Juniata nips Grove City, 55-53

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Visiting Juniata pulled out a 55-53 victory over host Grove City Tuesday night in non-conference women's basketball action in the Grove City College Arena.

Grove City trailed 52-50 with two minutes left and had four opportunities to tie the game or to take the lead. However, the Wolverines committed three turnovers in that span and also missed the front end of a one-and-one. Juniata's Courtney Callas drained three of four free throws down the stretch to help seal the win.

Grove City (0-6) closed to within 55-53 with 0.8 seconds left on a three-pointer from junior center Rachel McCoy (East Liverpool, Ohio/Beaver Local). However, the Wolverines could not regain possession.

Grove City trailed 50-39 with 6:55 left but senior guard Elyse Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) fired in a pair of three-pointers that ignited a 10-0 run. Bogusz led all scorers with 21 points, including five three-point goals. She also pulled in a team-high eight rebounds. McCoy added 10 points and three blocks.

The Wolverines limited Juniata (6-1) to just 29 percent (18 of 62) shooting from the field for the game. Juniata shot just 7 for 32 (22 percent) in the second half. Grove City also held a 48-38 advantage on the glass. The Wolverines made just 9 of 16 foul shots, though. Juniata made 13 of 22 attempts at the line.

Callas led Juniata with 14 points while Kelly Ashcraft added a 13-point, 13-rebound double-double. Juniata led 31-23 at the half.

Grove City will visit Carnegie Mellon Thursday evening at 5 p.m. in non-conference action. The Wolverines open Presidents' Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. against visiting Waynesburg.
