Grove City rallies past Tartans, 69-66
PITTSBURGH -- The Grove City College women's basketball team earned its first victory of the 2006-07 season Thursday night, slipping past host Carnegie Mellon, 69-66, in non-conference action at Skibo Gymnasium.
Grove City (1-6) trailed 66-63 with one minute left but the Wolverines closed to within one on a layup by junior center Rachel McCoy (East Liverpool, Ohio/Beaver Local) with 52 seconds left. Following a CMU turnover, Grove City took a 67-66 lead as McCoy turned a feed from freshman Krista Beechy (Winesburg, Ohio/Berlin Hiland) into another layup with 10 seconds left.
Junior guard Shannon Overdorff (Eighty Four, Pa./United) then clinched the win with a pair of free throws with one second left. Overdorff and senior guard Elyse Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) each fired in 18 points while Beechy added a career-high 13 points. Beechy also had a career-high five assists.
The Wolverines led by as many as 11, 24-13, in the first half and owned a 35-26 lead at the half. Grove City's lead swelled to 42-30 early in the second half on a three-point play by Bogusz. CMU (4-3) stormed back with an 11-0 run, though. The Tartans forged a 59-all deadlock before seizing a 62-61 lead on a three-point play from Ashley Rothwell with 2:24 left.
Colleen Light led CMU with 14 points. Rothwell had a game-high 15 rebounds. Each team had 44 rebounds and 21 turnovers. Grove City shot 26 of 65 (40 percent) from the floor while CMU made 26 of 68 field goals (38 percent).
McCoy finished with nine points, eight rebounds, four assists and three blocks. Overdorff also pulled in eight boards while junior forward Brittany Anderson (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) blocked three shots.
The victory is the first for first-year Grove City head coach Sarah Harris.
Grove City will open Presidents' Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. against visiting Waynesburg.
