W&J tops Grove City, 67-49
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Host Washington & Jefferson (17-7, 9-2 PAC) jumped out to a 10-0 lead Thursday night and led wire-to-wire in a 67-49 win over visiting Grove City in a Presidents' Athletic Conference women's basketball game at the Henry Memorial Center.
Junior center Rachel McCoy (East Liverpool, Ohio/Beaver Local) paced Grove City (5-18, 2-9 PAC) with a 15-point, 13-rebound double-double. McCoy also added five assists and four blocks.
Grove City trailed by as many as 19, 28-9, in the first half before eventually drawing to within 33-20 at the half. However, W&J broke the game open in the second half with a 15-4 run. Emily Hays led W&J with a dozen points while Maria Hillenbrand added an 11-point, 12-rebound double-double.
Grove City committed just 11 turnovers but shot 29 percent (20 of 68) from the floor. W&J made 25 of 50 field goals (50 percent). W&J also out-rebounded Grove City, 42-38.
Grove City will host Thomas More Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. It is Senior Day, as well as Hall of Fame Induction Day at the College.
