Westminster eliminates Grove City

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team concluded the 2006-07 season Tuesday night with a 67-46 loss to host Westminster Tuesday night in the quarterfinal round of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament at Buzz Ridl Gymnasium. Westminster, the second seed, advances to Friday's semifinals. Grove City, the No. 7 seed, finishes the season with a 5-20 overall record.

Westminster (21-5) jumped out to a 19-4 lead in the first half and extended the lead to 33-18 by halftime. The Lady Titans shot 57.7 percent (15 of 26) from the floor in the first half. Meanwhile, Grove City made just seven of 24 (29 percent) first-half field goal attempts.

Grove City closed to within five, 38-33, with 12 minutes left on a three-point goal by freshman Laura Miller (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson). However, Westminster countered with an 8-0 run and maintained a double-digit lead down the stretch.

Junior center Rachel McCoy (East Liverpool, Ohio/Beaver Local) led Grove City with nine points. Junior forward Brittany Anderson (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) and freshman guard Pam Larson (Port Allegany, Pa./Port Allegany) each tossed in seven points.

Desiree Sterling led Westminster with 17 points. Westminster out-rebounded Grove City, 36-26. Grove City turned the ball over 24 times.

Seniors Elyse Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and Sarah Bray (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) will graduate from the program.
