Grove City opens with win

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Four players scored in double figures Friday night, lifting the Grove City College women's basketball team to a 77-57 win over Marietta in the opening round of Allegheny College's National City Tip-Off Tournament at the David V. Wise Center. Grove City (1-0) will now play Bluffton in the championship game Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.

Junior guard Raeann Szelong (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) fired in a career-high 16 points while freshman forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) tossed in a dozen points in her collegiate debut. Sophomore Laura Miller (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) added 11 points while freshman guard C.J. Beatty (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Christian) rifled in 10 points.

Senior forward Brittany Anderson (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) added eight points on 4-of-4 shooting. Anderson also had a game-high nine rebounds and four blocked shots.

Grove City took the lead for good in the first half with an 15-0 run. Slater started the run with a layup while Szelong and Beatty added three-pointers during the spurt. The Wolverines led 43-23 at halftime.

Grove City (1-0) outrebounded the Pioneers, 49-41. Grove City also forced 19 turnovers while committing just 14 turnovers.

It is Grove City's first season-opening win since 2004.
