Wolverines win National City tourney; Szelong MVP

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team captured the championship at the Allegheny College National City Tip-Off Tournament Saturday afternoon by pulling out a 55-51 victory over Bluffton at the David V. Wise Center.

Grove City junior point guard Raeann Szelong (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) earned Tournament MVP honors after averaging 12.5 points and three assists per game in the Wolverines' two victories. Freshman guard C.J. Beatty (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Christian) joined Szelong on the All-Tournament Team after pumping in a dozen points in Saturday's title game victory.

Szelong added nine points in Saturday's win while freshman forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) contributed eight points and a team-high eight rebounds. Sophomore forwards Krista Beechy (Winesburg, Ohio/Berlin Hiland) and Laura Miller (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) also tossed in eight points apiece. Nine Grove City players scored in the win.

Slater put Grove City (2-0) ahead to stay with a pair of free throws at the 3:06 mark, which broke a 47-47 tie. Moments later, Slater scored in the paint, extending the lead to 51-47. She scored seven straight points for Grove City during that stretch as the Wolverines erased Bluffton's 46-44 lead.

Grove City held a 53-51 lead with 13 seconds left when junior guard Katy McCready (New Galilee, Pa./Mohawk) helped seal the win by draining a pair of free throws. The Wolverines made just 15 of 27 foul shots. Bluffton also struggled at the foul line as the Beavers made just 12 of 25 foul shots.

Grove City owned a 40-37 rebounding edge. The Wolverines shot 32 percent (17 of 54) from the floor while Bluffton made 17 of 46 (37 percent) field-goal attempts. Bluffton led 23-21 at halftime.

The Wolverines host Carnegie Mellon Tuesday night at 6 p.m. in the 2007-08 home opener.
