CMU tops Grove City, 59-47
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team fell to 2-1 Tuesday night with a 59-47 home setback against Carnegie Mellon (3-0) in non-conference action in the Grove City College Arena.
Carnegie Mellon bolted to a 19-8 lead in the first half and eventually stretched the lead to 36-22 by halftime. After falling behind by as many as 19 in the second half, Grove City charged back with an 11-2 run during the middle portion of the second half. Junior guard Raeann Szelong (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) started the run with the Wolverines' first three-pointer of the night.
Szelong added a jumper at the 6:33 mark while senior guard Shannon Overdorff (Eighty Four, Pa./United) bucketed a layup with 5:53 left to cut the CMU lead to 55-53. However, Carnegie Mellon center Ashley Rothwell short-circuited the comeback by hitting back-to-back jumpers.
Senior forward Brittany Anderson (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) led Grove City with 12 points while Overdorff added 10 points and six rebounds. Szelong chipped in nine points. Sophomore forward Krista Beechy (Winesburg, Ohio/Berlin Hiland) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Sophomore forward Laura Miller (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) recorded five steals.
Stacie Aleski led Carnegie Mellon with 19 points. CMU out-rebounded Grove City, 45-41. Carnegie Mellon shot 38 percent (24 of 63) from the floor while Grove City shot 30 percent (19 of 63). The Wolverines made just one of 20 three-point attempts.
Grove City will host Case Western Reserve next Wednesday, November 28 at 6 p.m.
