Wolverines fall at unbeaten Geneva
BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team dropped to 2-3 overall Saturday afternoon with a 67-53 setback at undefeated Geneva (6-0) in a matchup of Presidents' Athletic Conference squads at Metheny Field House.
Geneva forced 25 Grove City turnovers, which led to 23 Golden Tornado points. Grove City held Geneva to just 35 percent shooting (21 of 60) from the floor. However, Geneva went 21 for 29 at the foul line while the Wolverines made just six of 12 free-throw attempts.
Senior guard Shannon Overdorff (Eighty Four, Pa./United) led Grove City with 13 points while freshman forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) added 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Geneva led 31-25 at halftime and quickly extended the lead to 13 early in the second half. Grove City cut the lead back to six, 46-40, on a Slater jumper with 11:26 left. However, Geneva held Grove City without a field goal for over six minutes. Geneva maintained a double-digit lead over the final seven minutes of the game.
Grove City shot 41 percent (22 of 54) from the floor. Geneva owned a 44-35 edge on the glass. Sophomore forward Krista Beechy (Winesburg, Ohio/Berlin Hiland) recorded a game-high four steals for Grove City.
Allyson Clarke led Geneva with 21 points and 12 rebounds.
Geneva is a provisional member of NCAA Division III. Therefore, games against Geneva do not count in the conference standings.
Grove City will host Westminster Wednesday night at 6 p.m. in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.
