Westminster edges Grove City, 50-45

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team dropped to 0-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Wednesday night with a 50-45 home setback against Westminster (6-0, 1-0) at the Grove City College Arena.

Grove City (2-4 overall) trailed 47-45 in the closing moments and had a chance to tie or win the game. However, a Grove City turnover with 13 seconds left snuffed out the Wolverines' opportunity.

Grove City jumped out to a 13-3 lead after holding Westminster to just one field goal over the first 10 minutes. The Wolverines led 24-17 at the half but could not maintain the lead in the second half. Westminster opened the second half with a 9-0 run and eventually took the lead for good with 12:46 left on a layup by center Rachel Martinko.

Westminster led by as many as seven in the second half. Grove City slashed the lead to 43-42 on back-to-back jumpers from sophomore Krista Beechy (Winesburg, Ohio/Berlin Hiland). Beechy led Grove City with 10 points.

Grove City shot just 27 percent (17 of 64) from the field for the game. Freshman guard C.J. Beatty (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Christian) tossed in nine points on three three-point goals while freshman forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) also added nine points. Slater and Beechy both pulled in nine rebounds, helping Grove City own a 42-30 edge on the glass. Twenty-two of Grove City's rebounds came at the offensive end.

Emilee Ackerman led Westminster with 24 points. She went over the 1,000-point mark for her career and now has 1,011 career points.

Grove City will visit Washington & Jefferson Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. in PAC action.
