W&J tops Grove City

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team fell to 0-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Saturday afternoon with a 76-60 setback against host Washington & Jefferson in the Henry Memorial Center.

W&J (6-2, 2-0) broke the game open with a 18-4 run early in the second half. Grove City trailed 37-32 at the half and trailed by only three, 39-36, when W&J began its critical run with 16 minutes left.

Grove City led on five different occasions in the first half. A three-pointer from junior guard Raeann Szelong (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) at the 9:45 mark of the first half gave the Wolverines a 23-16 lead, their largest of the game. Szelong led Grove City with 14 points.

After shooting 47 percent (14 of 30) from the floor in the first half, the Wolverines made just eight of 29 (28 percent) second-half attempts. Meanwhile, W&J shot 56 percent (15 of 27) from the field in the second half.

Freshman Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) added 12 points for Grove City while sophomore Krista Beechy (Winesburg, Ohio/Berlin Hiland) recorded 10 points. Both Beechy and Slater pulled in seven rebounds. Sophomore Laura Miller (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. W&J owned a 40-36 rebounding edge.

Stephanie Smith led the Presidents with 15 points and eight assists.

Grove City (2-5 overall) will visit Penn State Behrend Monday night in non-conference action at 7 p.m.
