Wolverines earn OT win

GETTYSBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team opened 2008 Wednesday night by pulling out a 61-60 overtime victory over Montclair State (N.J.) in the semifinals of Gettysburg College's Days Inn Classic at Hen Bream Gymnasium. Grove City (3-6) will play either Gettysburg or Arcadia in Thursday's championship game at 4 p.m.

Freshman forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) paced Grove City with 22 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the floor. She also pulled in nine rebounds.

Senior forward Brittany Anderson (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) recorded a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double while sophomore Laura Miller (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) added 13 points.

Montclair State had a chance to win the game at the end of overtime but Marianne McGovern's jumper missed and Anderson grabbed the rebound to seal the win. Grove City led 60-54 with 2:30 left in overtime but committed a pair of turnovers that allowed Montclair State to rally.

The game featured 14 ties and 12 lead changes. Miller's layup at the end of the first half tied the game at 29. Neither team led by more than six points.

Kisandra Ayanbeku led Montclair State (5-5) with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Montclair State out-rebounded Grove City, 46-41. Grove City shot 25 of 64 (39 percent from the floor) while Montclair State shot 36 percent (23 of 64). Grove City had 27 turnovers while Montclair State turned the ball over 25 times.

Senior guard Shannon Overdorff (Eighty Four, Pa./United) handed out a season-high six assists for Grove City.

The victory snaps Grove City's six-game slide. The Wolverines had not played since a 57-44 setback at Penn State Behrend Dec. 10. Grove City had not played an overtime game since defeating Washington & Jefferson in double-overtime Feb. 12, 2005, 85-83. Grove City last won a single-overtime game Feb. 22, 2002 as the Wolverines downed W&J in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament, 65-62.

Grove City is aiming for its second tournament title this year. In November, Grove City opened the season by winning Allegheny College's National City Tip-Off Tournament in Meadville, Pa. The Wolverines will then return to PAC play Saturday at Chatham at 2 p.m.
