Wolverines top Waynesburg, 62-52
WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team earned its first Presidents' Athletic Conference victory Wednesday night by pulling out a 62-52 win at Waynesburg in the Rudy Marisa Field House.
Freshman forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) fired in 20 points in her first collegiate start while sophomore forward Krista Beechy (Winesburg, Ohio/Berlin Hiland) recorded 17 points, 14 rebounds and five assists. It is Beechy's second straight double-double.
Freshman guard C.J. Beatty (Westerville, Ohio/Worthington Christian) added 11 points off the bench for Grove City (4-10, 1-5 PAC).
Grove City trailed 23-20 at halftime but outscored Waynesburg (1-13, 0-5 PAC) 20-6 over the first 10 minutes of the second half. Senior guard Shannon Overdorff (Eighty Four, Pa./United) gave Grove City the lead for good with a three-pointer at the 16:55 mark while sophomore Laura Miller (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) capped the run with back-to-back baskets.
The Wolverines pushed their lead to 12 points on six different occasions in the second half. Grove City shot 16 of 31 (51 percent) from the field in the second half while Waynesburg made 11 of 30 (37 percent) field goals in the second half.
Waynesburg bolted to an 8-2 lead in the first half but Grove City rebounded to take an 11-8 lead midway through the half. Beechy scored 11 of her 17 points in the first half.
Grove City out-rebounded Waynesburg 36-34. The Wolverines shot 24 of 57 (42 percent) from the field while Waynesburg made 21 of 51 (41 percent) attempts. Grove City forced 23 turnovers. It is Grove City's first win at Waynesburg since 2005. Grove City is 3-0 this year when scoring 61 or more points.
Amanda Mitchell led Waynesburg with 18 points.
Grove City hosts Saint Vincent Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
