Wolverines earn 5th straight
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Sparked by an 18-0 run in the first half, the Grove City College women's basketball team earned its fifth consecutive victory Wednesday night as the Wolverines picked up a 61-51 win over host Westminster in a Presidents' Athletic Conference game at Memorial Field House.
Grove City (8-10, 3-5 PAC) trailed by scores of 8-2 and 13-7 early before taking the lead for good in the first half. Freshman forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) drained a pair of three-point goals during the run while junior guard Raeann Szelong (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) and sophomore guard Pam Larson (Port Allegany, Pa./Port Allegany) also added threes.
Senior Shannon Overdorff (Eighty Four, Pa./United) capped the run with a jumper, which gave Grove City a 25-13 lead with 6:50 left in the half. Grove City led 30-20 at the half.
Grove City led throughout the second half, although Westminster (11-7, 4-4 PAC) closed to within three on five different occasions. Westminster cut Grove City's lead to 54-51 with 1:28 left but Grove City freshman C.J. Beatty (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Christian) buried a three-pointer with 47 seconds remaining. Beatty and Slater both hit a pair of free throws in the closing moments to seal the win.
Slater led Grove City with 19 points while Overdorff added nine. Larson chipped in with eight points. Emilee Ackerman led Westminster with 26 points.
Grove City shot 23 of 50 (46 percent) from the field while limiting Westminster to a 34-percent effort (18 of 53). Westminster owned a 32-27 edge on the glass.
The Wolverines will host Washington & Jefferson Saturday at 1 p.m. in PAC action.
