Grove City falls to Chatham

GROVE CITY, Pa. - The Grove City College women's basketball team fell to 8-12 overall and 3-7 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Wednesday night with a 63-56 home setback against Chatham (8-11, 4-6 PAC) at the Grove City College Arena.

Grove City freshman Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) fired in a career-high 25 points and also pulled down a career-best 12 rebounds. Grove City out-rebounded the Cougars 46-32 but could not overcome 19 turnovers and a 4-for-10 performance at the foul line.

The Wolverines fell behind 22-12 in the first half but eventually closed the gap to 31-27 by halftime. Grove City then scored the first five points of the second half as Slater drilled a three-pointer and sophomore Laura Miller (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) hit a short jumper.

Chatham took the lead for good with a 16-4 run that featured a pair of three-point plays from Kayla Hilko and two three-pointers by Lizz King. Miller's putback brought Grove City to within six, 62-56, with 28 seconds left but the Wolverines could get no closer.

Hilko led Chatham with 15 while Barb Petty fired in 13, including four three-point goals. King had 11. Chatham shot 9 for 20 (45 percent) behind the three-point line while Grove City made four of 14 three-point attempts. Overall, Grove City shot 38 percent (24 of 64) from the field while Chatham made 23 of 53 (43 percent) attempts.

Junior guard Raeann Szelong (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) recorded five assists for Grove City while sophomore Krista Beechy (Winesburg, Ohio/Berlin Hiland) had four assists and three steals.

Grove City will visit Thomas More Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. in PAC play.
