Wolverines cap regular season with big win

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team wrapped up the 2007-08 regular season with a 90-48 victory over visiting Thiel Saturday afternoon in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Grove City College Arena.

Four Grove City players scored in double figures Saturday, led by freshman forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) with 18 points. Senior forward Brittany Anderson (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls), playing her final home game, recorded a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double. Junior guard Raeann Szelong (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) and freshman guard C.J. Beatty (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Christian) both added 12 points.

Sophomore forward Krista Beechy (Winesburg, Ohio/Berlin Hiland) added 10 rebounds and six assists, along with six points while classmate Laura Miller (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) distributed a career-high seven assists. Miller also had seven rebounds as Grove City owned a 56-40 edge on the glass.

Grove City broke the game open with a 21-0 run over the final nine minutes of the half. The Wolverines trailed 20-18 but Beatty hit the first of her four three-point goals to give Grove City a 21-20 lead. Szelong and Miller added threes during the blitz while senior guard Shannon Overdorff (Eighty Four, Pa./United) capped the run with a buzzer-beating jumper at the end of the half.

The Wolverines (10-15, 5-9 PAC) limited Thiel to just 23 percent (14 of 62) shooting from the field. Grove City, meanwhile, shot 35 of 74 (47 percent), including a 10-for-19 (53 percent) effort on three-pointers. All 12 Grove City players scored in the win. All 12 also played at least 10 minutes.

Jena Cook led Thiel with 14 points. Grove City is now 7-0 when scoring 61 points or more in a game. Grove City last scored 90 points or more in a game Feb. 7, 2000 in a 97-32 victory over Chatham.

The Wolverines will enter next week's PAC Championship Tournament as the No. 6 seed. Grove City will face No. 3 Bethany Tuesday night in the quarterfinals at 7 p.m.
