Grove City drops opener
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team opened the 2008-09 season Tuesday night with a 61-50 home setback against NAIA powerhouse Daemen (N.Y.) in non-conference action at the Grove City College Arena.
Junior forward Laura Miller (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) paced Grove City (0-1) with 14 points while junior forward Krista Beechy (Winesburg, Ohio/Berlin Hiland) added a dozen points. Sophomore Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) tossed in 10 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
Grove City committed only 13 turnovers in the game, including just three in the second half. However, Grove City could not overcome a 19-for-64 (30 percent) shooting effort from the field. Defensively, Grove City forced 26 turnovers and limited Daemen to 32 percent (10 of 31) shooting in the second half.
Daemen (3-3) closed the first half on a 7-0 run and led 35-23 at halftime. Grove City had pulled to within 28-23 with 5:29 left in the half on a three-point play by Miller. However, Grove City misfired on its final eight shots of the half.
Sarah Bogardus led Daemen with 26 points. Sarah Soroka added 10 points and 11 rebounds. Daemen out-rebounded Grove City 49-36.
Daemen opened the season ranked 17th nationally in the NAIA. The teams had never met prior to Tuesday's game.
Grove City will face Ursinus Friday at 5:30 p.m. in the semifinals of Messiah's Wingate Inn Tournament in Grantham, Pa.
