Wolverines nip Westminster

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team earned its second straight victory Saturday afternoon by pulling out a 40-36 win over host Westminster in a Presidents' Athletic Conference game at Memorial Field House.

Grove City limited Westminster to a 10-for-44 (23 percent) shooting effort from the floor. The Grove City defense limited Westminster to a 3-for-27 performance in the second half. The Wolverines also forced 20 turnovers.

Grove City (2-5, 1-1 PAC) broke a 34-34 tie with 29 seconds left as sophomore Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) bucketed a short jumper in the lane. In the final 14 seconds, sophomore Jenna Johnston (Strattanville, Pa./Clarion-Limestone) and junior Laura Miller (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) both sank a pair of free throws to sew up the victory.

Senior guard Raeann Szelong (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) led Grove City with 13 points while Slater added nine. The Wolverines shot 13 of 52 (25 percent) from the field for the game.

Defensively, Grove City blanked Westminster for the first nine minutes and 43 seconds of the game. In the second half, Grove City did not allow a Titan field goal for the first six minutes of the period.

Miller added three assists while junior forward Krista Beechy (Winesburg, Ohio/Berlin Hiland) recorded three steals. Gina Brunetti led Westminster (2-4, 0-1 PAC) with 10 points.

The 40 points is Grove City's lowest point total ever in a victory. It is the fewest number of points allowed by the Wolverines since a 65-31 win over Ursinus Nov. 21, 2003.

Grove City will host Allegheny Wednesday night at 6 p.m. in non-conference action.
