Grove City tops Allegheny for 3rd straight win

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team extended its win streak to three Wednesday night by pulling out a 54-51 victory over visiting Allegheny (5-4) in non-conference action at the Grove City College Arena.

Grove City (3-5) broke a 49-49 tie with 48 seconds left on a three-point play from senior point guard Raeann Szelong (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton). Allegheny closed to within 52-51 on a layup by Stephanie Wolf but Grove City junior Laura Miller (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) sank both ends of a one-and-one with four seconds left to extend the lead back to three. A desperation heave at the buzzer by Allegheny fell well short.

Sophomore forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) paced Grove City with 18 points and nine rebounds. Miller added nine points while junior Krista Beechy (Winesburg, Ohio/Berlin Hiland) and sophomore Jenna Johnston (Strattanville, Pa./Clarion-Limestone) each scored eight. Johnston also grabbed nine rebounds while Beechy distributed four assists.

Grove City shot 52 percent (13 of 25) from the field in the first half and led 34-23 at the half. Allegheny chipped away at the lead throughout the second half and eventually tied the game at 49 on Lauren Donahoe's three-point play. Allegheny shot 45 percent (13 of 29) from the floor in the second half.

For the game, Grove City shot 44 percent (20 of 46) while Allegheny made 22 of 60 shots (37 percent). Each team had 34 rebounds. Emilie Simone led Allegheny with 10 points.

Grove City is off until a non-conference game at Carnegie Mellon December 31.
