Wolverines fall at CMU, 53-48
PITTSBURGH -- The Grove City College women's basketball team fell to 3-6 overall Wednesday afternoon with a 53-48 setback against host Carnegie Mellon (3-7) in non-conference action at Skibo Gymnasium. The loss snaps Grove City's three-game winning streak.
Carnegie Mellon closed the game with an 8-0 run over the final 2:33 of the game. Grove City took a 46-45 lead with 3:18 left on a three-pointer from freshman guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley). Moments later, sophomore forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) pushed the lead to 48-45 with a layup. However, the Wolverines missed their final four shots from the field.
Slater fired in 18 points while Gebrosky finished with 11 points, including three three-point goals. The Wolverines shot 37 percent (20 of 54) from the field while Carnegie Mellon made 22 of 49 (45 percent) attempts from the field. Jacki Cortese led the Tartans with 13 points.
Carnegie Mellon jumped out to a 10-2 lead early in the first half but Grove City countered with a 13-4 run in taking its only lead of the half. Slater's jumper at the 5:51 mark put Grove City up 15-14. Carnegie Mellon forged a 22-22 tie by halftime.
CMU out-rebounded Grove City 32-31. Slater grabbed a game-high seven rebounds for Grove City. Senior guard Raeann Szelong (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) had five assists while freshman forward Jayme Caldwell (Smithville, Ohio/Smithville) recorded four steals.
Grove City will host Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Chatham Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Grove City College Arena.
