Wolverines storm past Behrend, 75-58

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team improved to 4-7 overall Monday night with a 75-58 victory over visiting Penn State Behrend in non-conference action at the Grove City College Arena.

Juniors forward Krista Beechy (Winesburg, Ohio/Berlin Hiland) and Laura Miller (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) each scored a career-high 20 points while sophomore forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) fired in 18 points and grabbed a career-best 18 rebounds. Beechy also added 12 rebounds and three blocks while Miller recorded four assists.

Grove City led 33-22 at halftime and extended the lead to 45-28 early in the second half. Behrend (3-6) whittled the lead to 59-52 with 4:18 left but Grove City closed the game with a 16-6 run. A Miller jumper and a Beechy putback ignited the game-ending spurt.

Grove City shot 15 of 29 (52 percent) from the field in the second half. For the game, the Wolverines shot 46 percent (30 of 65) from the field. Behrend made 21 of 67 (31 percent) attempts. Grove City also owned a 48-38 rebound advantage.

Christine Krankota and Natalie Engel each had a dozen points for Behrend. Behrend turned the ball over 25 times while Grove City had 26 turnovers.

Freshman guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) added four assists for Grove City while Slater tallied three steals. The Wolverines went 14 for 16 at the foul line, including 12-of-14 marksmanship in the second half.

It is the first time that Grove City has had two 20-point scorers since an 84-73 win at Walsh December 4, 2004. That day, Sandy O'Keefe scored 27 points and Abby Moose added 22. The 75 points are a season high for Grove City. The Wolverines have won 10 straight when scoring 61 points or more.

Grove City will visit Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Thomas More Wednesday at 5 p.m.
