Wolverines slip past Bethany, 64-60

BETHANY, W. Va. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team improved to 2-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Saturday afternoon with a 64-60 victory over host Bethany (4-9, 0-4 PAC) at Hummel Field House.

Four Grove City players scored in double figures, led by freshman guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) with 16 points. Senior point guard Raeann Szelong (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) and sophomore forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) both fired in 14 points while junior forward Krista Beechy (Winesburg, Ohio/Berlin Hiland) added 11.

Grove City (5-8 overall) shot 52 percent (24 of 46) from the field for the game, including a 7-for-14 effort beyond the three-point line. Gebrosky's third three-point goal of the game put Grove City ahead to stay, 52-50, with 7:12 left.

The Wolverines led by as many as seven down the stretch but Bethany eventually slashed the lead to 61-60. Junior forward Laura Miller (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) extended the lead to two by splitting a pair of free throws with nine seconds left. Moments later, freshman forward Jayme Caldwell (Smithville, Ohio/Smithville) drew an offensive foul on Bethany's Caelyn DiSanti. Miller then sealed the win by sinking two foul shots with 0.9 seconds left.

Grove City limited Bethany to 38 percent (23 of 60) shooting from the field. The Wolverines also forced 28 Bethany turnovers. Bethany coerced 36 Grove City turnovers.

Szelong added five assists and four steals while Beechy and Slater both had nine rebounds each. Bethany out-rebounded Grove City 34-31. Grove City has won 11 straight games when scoring at least 61 points.

Kelly Goode led Bethany with 15 points while Renee Brandenburg added 11.

Grove City will host Waynesburg Wednesday night at 6 p.m. in conference action.
