Grove City holds off Waynesburg

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team improved to 3-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Wednesday night with a 61-51 victory over visiting Waynesburg in the Grove City College Arena.

Grove City (6-8 overall) jumped out to an 11-0 lead and held Waynesburg (4-9, 2-3 PAC) without a field goal until the 10-minute mark of the first half. Grove City held Waynesburg to 5-for-23 (22 percent) shooting from the field in the first half and led 31-12 at the half.

Waynesburg eventually closed to within six at 53-47 but a layup from Grove City freshman Jayme Caldwell (Smithville, Ohio/Smithville) with two minutes left helped snuff out the comeback. Caldwell finished with a career-high 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting.

Sophomore forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) posted a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double for Grove City while junior Laura Miller (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) also fired in 14 points. Freshman guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) added eight points and a team-high five assists.

For the game, Grove City shot 44 percent (24 of 55). Waynesburg finished 19 of 50 (38 percent) from the field after a 14-of-27 effort in the second half. Grove City out-rebounded the Yellow Jackets 36-30. Grove City forced 20 turnovers and committed just 14 turnovers.

Grove City has won 15 straight home games against Waynesburg. The Wolverines have also won 12 straight when scoring 61 points or more.

Grove City will visit Saint Vincent Saturday night at 6 p.m.
