Thiel tops Wolverines

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team dropped into a tie for third place in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Wednesday night with a 54-44 setback against visiting Thiel at the Grove City College Arena. Grove City is now 3-4 in the PAC and 6-10 overall.

Grove City led 27-26 at halftime but Thiel (8-7, 3-4) opened the second half with a 10-0 run. Thiel held Grove City scoreless for the first eight minutes of the half. Thiel then maintained a double-digit lead for much of the second half.

Sophomore forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) led Grove City with 25 points and 11 rebounds. The 25 points match a career high for Slater, who shot 12 of 17 from the floor.

Grove City led by as many as eight, 23-15, in the first half. Thiel took a 26-25 lead on a basket from Amber Bodrick but Slater gave Grove City the lead at the half with a layup before the buzzer.

Grove City shot 40 percent (21 of 53) from the field while Thiel made 23 of 54 (43 percent) attempts.

Junior forward Krista Beechy (Winesburg, Ohio/Berlin Hiland) added 10 points and three assists for the Wolverines. Junior forward Laura Miller (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) pulled in a team-high eight rebounds. Thiel out-rebounded Grove City 36-32. Grove City turned the ball over 17 times while Thiel had 14 turnovers. Bodrick led Thiel with 23 points.

Grove City is now tied for third in the PAC at 3-4 with Bethany, Thiel, Waynesburg and Westminster. The Wolverines will visit Geneva Saturday evening at 5:30 p.m.
