Wolverines charge past Geneva, 57-43

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team completed a season sweep of longtime rival Geneva Saturday night by earning a 57-43 victory over the host Golden Tornadoes in a clash of Presidents' Athletic Conference members at Metheny Field House. Grove City (7-10) trailed 23-20 at halftime but took the lead for good in the second half with an 18-5 run.

Freshman guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) scored all 15 of her points in the second half while junior forward Krista Beechy (Winesburg, Ohio/Berlin Hiland) and sophomore forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) both posted double-doubles. Beechy had 12 points and 11 rebounds while Slater recorded 13 points and also hauled in 10 rebounds.

Grove City took the lead for good with 13:35 left as Gebrosky broke a 32-32 tie with her first of three three-point goals in the half. Moments later, she drained another three to give Grove City a 38-33 lead. Her third three-pointer of the half extended the Wolverine lead to 47-37 with 4:17 left.

Defensively, Grove City held Geneva (8-8) to just two field goals over the final 9:33 of the game. The Wolverines also forced 17 second-half turnovers and 31 turnovers for the game. Meanwhile, Grove City shot 54 percent (13 of 24) from the field in the second half. Overall, Grove City shot 40 percent (20 of 50) from the field, including a 5-for-11 effort on three-pointers. Geneva finished the game 13 of 36 (36 percent).

Grove City (7-10) also out-rebounded Geneva 35-28. Slater and Gebrosky both had five steals each while junior Laura Miller (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) had a team-high three assists.

Geneva jumped out to a 9-3 lead early in the first half and led by as many as seven, 16-9, in the first half. Grove City held Geneva scoreless for the final 3:32 of the first half and pulled to within 23-20 by halftime. Rachel Barry led Geneva with 15 points.

Grove City earned a 68-58 home win over Geneva December 3 at the Grove City College Arena. It is the Wolverines' third straight win over Geneva. Saturday's game does not count in the conference standings due to Geneva's provisional status in NCAA Division III.

Grove City hosts Westminster Wednesday night at 6 p.m. in PAC action at the Grove City College Arena.
