Grove City completes sweep of Westminster
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team completed a season sweep of longtime rival Westminster Wednesday night by earning a 57-45 win over the Titans in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Grove City College Arena.
Grove City (8-10, 4-4 PAC) held Westminster to just 32 percent (16 of 50) shooting from the floor for the game. The Wolverines also converted 24 Westminster turnovers into 27 points.
Sophomore forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) fired in a team-high 18 points on 9-of-10 shooting for Grove City while junior Laura Miller (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) added a dozen points.
The Wolverines charged out to an 8-0 lead after holding Westminster scoreless for the first 5:30 of the game. Three straight jumpers by Slater helped Grove City extend its lead to 16-6. Grove City pushed the lead to 30-17 with 2:12 left in the half as freshman guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) fired in a three-pointer.
Grove City held Westminster without a field goal over the final 5:51 of the first half.
Westminster eventually trimmed Grove City's lead to 40-35 with 8:23 left. But Miller scored a putback and then assisted a Gebrosky three-pointer to double the lead. Grove City then maintained a double-digit lead for most of the remaining six minutes.
Grove City shot 41 percent (23 of 56) from the field for the game. The Wolverines also had just 11 turnovers. Senior guard Raeann Szelong (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) distributed five assists while freshman forward Jayme Caldwell (Smithville, Ohio/Smithville) contributed four assists in her first collegiate start. As a team, Grove City finished with 18 assists.
Amy Dolsak led Westminster (6-11, 3-5 PAC) with 19 points and 16 rebounds. Westminster out-rebounded Grove City 37-33.
Grove City now has sole possession of third place in the PAC. Grove City earned a 40-36 win at Westminster December 6. It is Grove City's first season sweep of Westminster since the 2002-03 season.
Grove City will visit Washington & Jefferson Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. in PAC action.
